GW student creates field of dreams

Fixing the field: George Washington High School student, Joel Goldberg, uses a wheelbarrow to deliver dirt to the infield.

Joel Goldberg was a key member of the George Washington High School baseball team that captured the Public League championship, and the 17-year-old junior spent a recent Saturday helping to spruce up the Eagles’ field.

Goldberg, who lives on Susan Road in Bustleton, is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 18, based at St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, 608 Welsh Road.

At age 6, he joined Cub Scouts, and over the years he has earned numerous merit badges and awards and displayed leadership.

For his Eagle Scout project, he decided to give the Washington varsity baseball field a makeover.

The second baseman received plenty of help from his brothers Josh and Aaron, teammates, coaches, fellow Scouts, adult Scout leaders and members of Iron Workers Local 401. His mom, Gail, supplied pizza and drinks for the crew.

The work included replacing and painting wood bleachers; spray-painting the fence near the home dugout; leveling, weeding and seeding a large dirt mound; restoring dirt to the infield; painting doors to the school and football stadium; and replacing a bench on the tennis courts. Goldberg also hopes to fly an American flag at the field for the pregame Pledge of Allegiance.

Goldberg and his helpers received donations from Sherwin-Williams, Lowe’s and the Home Depot in Bensalem.

At Washington, Goldberg is a member of the National Honor Society, the junior class treasurer and a participant in the science fair, and takes classes as part of the International Baccalaureate program. He hopes to become a doctor.

The teenager will officially become an Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor ceremony that will probably take place in the fall. ••
